Alberta NDP’s Nagwan Al-Guneid is now the MLA for Calgary-Glenmore after winning a third recount.

She received 12,687 votes, whereas United Conservative Party’s (UCP) Whitney Issik received 12,639.

Elections Alberta automatically recounted following the May 29 election, with the UCP then calling for a judicial recount on Jun 16, the last possible day to do so.

“I’m extremely grateful for the support of the people of Calgary-Glenmore,” said Al-Guneid in a news release. “I can’t wait to get to work on behalf of all Albertans in our community.”

Meanwhile, the UCP also called for a judicial recount for Calgary-Acadia, which NDP’s Diana Batten won.

Former Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro lost his seat by 25 votes, though initial reports following the election had the margin as close as seven.

The loss of Shandro led to a change to Premier Danielle Smith’s provincial cabinet. UCP MLA Mickey Amery was selected as the Alberta Justice Minister.

A result for Calgary-Acadia is expected Friday, and a Batten victory would bring the NDP caucus to 38 MLAs.

The NDP MLAs elected on May 29 were sworn in Monday, while UCP MLAs were sworn in Tuesday, along with re-electing Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper as speaker of the Alberta Legislature.

He was up against NDP MLA Christina Gray. A UCP majority assured his victory.

The UCP currently has 48 seats, while the NDP has 37 seats.

A full legislative session won’t begin until Oct. 30.
