Renter’s Choice – a business built on a dream, heartache and perseverance

LETHBRIDGE, AB. –– Every business is built on a dream or an aspiration of ‘what could be’. Renter’s Choice is no different and has its own story of ups and downs on the road to success, as it celebrates 25-years in Southern Alberta.

It all began with Ted and Amy Breznik. The newlyweds were living in economically struggling Ontario in July of 1992, when they decided to move to booming Alberta. Three years later, in May 1995, the couple left full-time jobs to embark on their entrepreneurial dream – they opened Renter’s Choice and Management Ltd.

For the Brezniks, both their business and family began to grow. In April of 1998, Ted Jr. was born, followed quickly by Josh in September 1999. Staff numbers increased as well, from one to three to five full-time employees. Ted branched out and opened RC Construction. The service area of Renter’s Choice stretched beyond Taber to include Burdett to the east, Wrentham to the south, Vauxhall, Nobleford and Picture Butte to the north, Barnwell, Coaldale and Lethbridge to the west.

Business and family were thriving for the Brezniks. But, in March of 2011, Ted Jr. was diagnosed with Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura [ITP]. The unimaginable happened in November 2012 – Ted Jr. died. However, in the midst of their tragedy and heartache, five lives were saved because Ted Jr. was an organ donor.

The death of someone so young can destroy a family, or they can find a way to rise above the pain. The Brezniks are an example of rising above. In the course of running their business, Renter’s Choice, Amy Breznik says they take advantage of opportunities to share their story and talk to others about organ donation.

“We encourage everyone to visit www.myhealth.alberta.ca & register to be an organ and tissue donor.”

“We are forever grateful to our staff whom during our time of grief continued to provide outstanding service to both landlords and tenants. Resiliency and tenacity brought us back from our sorrow allowing us to, once again, engage in the growth and prosperity of Renter’s Choice and Management Ltd.”
